      As I describe elsewhere, many (some? most?) administrations assess their faculty by measuring means produced, not by measuring ends accomplished. For example, every year my performance evaluation is based on a list of refereed articles, conference papers, book chapters, proposals, the hallowed h-index, and so on—things that alone make no.       Layered onto the focus on research performance as measured by citations, peer review or whatever, is a strand in the literature that research should be ‘relevant’ or have ‘impact’. The calls for research to be relevant, or to respond better to research ‘users’, is understandable. Various treasuries and ministries of finance and education seek to demonstrate accountability and. Multiple methods are used to evaluate and measure faculty performance in teaching, patient care, scholarship, and service. All full-time faculty are evaluated on an annual basis by department chairs and the Dean. Faculty and courses are also evaluated at the end of each semester by students.
